The new age of Social Networks

In the last days, the announcement of Mark Zuckerberg of changing the name of Facebook went around. This news caused a stir and was something that most of us cannot expect. Anyway, those who were looking to social networks in a detached manner, already discover that something was (and it’s) changing.

In this article, I will try to retrace the history of social networks, understand why the new stars are replacing the old ones, and what will be the driver for the future.

The early age of social networks

I’m one of the first age social network adapters when facebook landed in Italy in early 2008. At that time, having a Facebook account was cool and a status symbol of young and smart people (not all had had an internet connection, a PC, etc…). Anyway, when a few years later the smartphone brings a pc with an internet connection inside the pocket of everybody — and at an affordable price — there wasn't any more barrier between the social networks and the masses. This is what happened in Italy based on my experience, but I suppose that it was the same in other countries, maybe with different timing (probably this happen years before into the country that was more technologized).
